Experience

My primary goal as a tutor is to engage students with a unique and innovative learning process that will help them excel in their current academics, future schooling and furthermore, in the spectrum of life pursuits that awaits them! Paying attention to the distinct abilities of and challenges facing each student, I tailor my tutoring methods to accommodate a range of learning styles and needs. Through this adaptive approach, I believe it is possible for every individual to succeed at and gain enjoyment from studying Spanish. I have experience teaching in a variety of settings, including as a certified substitute teacher for K-12 within Santa Cruz County, as a teaching assistant in Santa Cruz and Mountain View schools and most recently, as an instructor at a local, private academy. I have been tutoring both through WyzAnt and independently for the past two years. Prior to my work in education, I received my B.A. in Art from UC-Santa Cruz, propelled toward this major by a broad background of intellectual explorations and diverse experiences. Beginning at an early age, I have had extensive training in Spanish and carry an in-depth understanding of both the written and spoken language. Having traveled extensively in Latin America on more than five separate occasions, I have noted cultural and idiomatic differences that are useful to students trying to improve and gain real understanding outside of the classroom setting. Recently, I have lived for two months in Spain, further improving my own Spanish language abilities and cultural fluency. I tutor up to AP-Level Spanish and can offer help with conceptual understanding of grammar, conversation and reading comprehension, development of effective study techniques and improvement of organizational/time management. While I like to focus on the homework and study materials that have been provided to each student, I also supplement with outside resources whenever possible. I find it especially helpful to incorporate online study materials, alternative textbooks and various activity worksheets in conjunction with Spanish visual and audio media (i.e. music, video, radio, podcasts etc.) in order to reinforce different elements of Spanish language and culture. In all of my tutoring sessions, I aim to bring the Spanish language alive and invigorate students to reach for the stars! Boosting confidence and embracing inquisitiveness are sources of pride for how I work with students and I look forward to establishing unique relationships with each student to help grow their knowledge base in the most sustainable way. Please contact me with any questions or to figure out how I can help! Thank you, Amasa
